What made people take to the streets of the city?

There have always been events that cause large-scale dissatisfaction among people. It is inevitable because, for example, a whole country with a multimillion population is ruled by a limited circle of people. Therefore, residents of cities, regions and countries sometimes gather to express their opinions or raise various issues. In the modern world, such phenomena have taken the form of protests and human chains. One such large-scale event was held in London in autumn 2022. People formed a human chain near the British Parliament. But why did they join the protest? Later, they merged into a human chain. The protesters were ordinary residents of London and prominent personalities. Among the latter ones were the actor and singer Russell Brand as well as the British politician and former leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn. They protested against the extradition of Julian Assange. A human chain formed along Westminster Bridge, the front of the Parliament and continued all the way to Victoria Tower Gardens. Another group of people began to march along the streets, singing songs in support of Julian. The crowd applauded and supported Stella Assange, who walked along the street with two children. One of the boys even smiled at all the protesters, feeling the meaningfulness of the event.

Who is Julian Assange?

Julian Assange is an Australian journalist who has become famous for his criticism of censorship, investigations and freedom of the press infringements. Since his childhood, he travelled a lot with his mother and became interested in programming. Interestingly, his mother didn’t support traditional schools, so she taught her son at home or brought him to lectures by university professors. In general, there were many unusual and interesting moments in the boy’s life, but nevertheless, he became a successful person. In 2006, Julian founded his own website, WikiLeaks, where he posted important and, at the same time, extraordinary articles. Thus, the journalist attracted public attention to important topics. However, some of his materials caused an investigation and indictment.

Who is right?

Julian Assange’s case divided society into his supporters and opposers. The US government accused him of espionage and, in particular, of the fact that the WikiLeaks website made public confidential military records and diplomatic telegrams. According to Washington’s statements, the journalist endangered the lives of many people. Meanwhile, his supporters, on the contrary, claimed that he exposed the US crimes during the armed conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. People who didn’t believe in the accusations were assured that it would lead to large-scale consequences. Supporters were sure that Julian Assange just wanted to show the truth to modern society, which undergoes informational influences every day. According to the protesters, Julian’s arrest would intimidate many other journalists who would like to expose the many secrets of this world. However, they would be afraid to do it after the conviction of the journalist who told the truth.

The protest became something much bigger than just the protection of a beloved journalist. After that, the issue of democratic values and political secrets has become relevant all over the world. The theories about a global elite that seeks to rule our world began to spread around the globe as well.
