In particular, the post of Mayor appeared in the city. That event also contributed to the formation of the London Assembly, an electoral body that is part of the Greater London Authority. A lot of politicians from all over Great Britain confirm the importance of the body for the development and functioning of the city. So, what did the London Assembly was created for? What is its main purpose? Who is its member and what do they do? This person manages the city and has all the tools for the development of London. However, the Mayor has to report to someone regarding his obligatory activities. The Assembly was created for that very reason. It holds meetings from time to time to discuss important issues in the city and consider the Mayor’s agenda.

In general, the London Assembly controls both the Mayor and his councillors during plenary sessions or committee meetings. In addition, approximately ten times a year, the Assembly plans hour-long meetings where its representatives ask the Mayor a series of questions. Most of these events are public. They allow Londoners to learn more about the authorities’ activities and the general situation in the city. Also, the Mayor is obliged to follow the official recommendations provided by the London Assembly and respond to its proposals.

Another important function of the Assembly

In addition to the control of the Mayor’s activity, the London Assembly is oriented towards the residents of the city. It means that its representatives solve issues that are important to the capital of Great Britain. The representatives conduct social surveys, monitor the development and effectiveness of many projects and communicate with Londoners. Based on the collected information, the Assembly holds meetings to determine ways of overcoming problems in the economic, medical, cultural, ecological and other spheres. Their decisions can improve locals’ lives, starting with the usual adjustment of public transport schedules and ending with the fight against global social phenomena, such as alcohol and drug addiction. If the London Assembly faces some difficulties, its members have the right to insist on a change in national or local policy and the activities of the Mayor.

Composition of the Assembly

The London Assembly consists of 25 members. These people are elected along with the Mayor of the city. Fourteen of them are elected by constituencies and the remaining eleven represent the whole of London. The members of the Assembly are united by one main goal, compliance with the democratic accountability of the city Mayor. Each year in April, the Chair of the London Assembly and his Deputy are also elected. All members of this body must attend meetings and participate in the decision-making process. They mostly conduct official activities and make decisions in open and public meetings. Sometimes, members have the right to do so outside of the meeting room. However, such cases should be provided with reasons and appropriate powers. Every such decision should be notified to the London Assembly and recorded as the member’s delegated powers. In general, this body and all its members do play an important role in improving the living standards of Londoners and solving problems in many capitals’ spheres.

The London management system has undergone changes after the 2000 referendum.
