He was born in London on November 1, 1762, and became the seventh child in a rather influential family. His father was also involved in politics. Spencer had a relatively happy childhood. He studied at school, and later, entered Trinity College in Cambridge. That man was always distinguished by diligence and discipline. He graduated in 1782. In 1796, Perceval began his political career and changed several positions since then. He had a conservative political orientation and gained a reputation as a radical politician. However, the most significant period in his professional career lasted from 1809 to 1812 when he held the position of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, one day, he lost his career success along with his life.

How and where did the assassination take place?

In general, Spencer Perceval’s life was filled with many interesting facts. He was the only Solicitor General to become Prime Minister. In addition, his death went down in history because Spencer was the only Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to be assassinated. That terrible event happened on the evening of May 11, 1812. Spencer Perceval was shot dead in the lobby of the House of Commons in London. At first glance, it had to be an ordinary day. Everyone was engaged in their own businesses and nobody thought that something could disrupt the routine. As always, the Prime Minister came to the House of Commons. However, at the entrance, he encountered a man who took out a gun and shot Spencer in the chest. The wounded man was moved to another room (at that time, his heart was still beating) and people called a doctor. A surgeon arrived a few minutes later, but it was too late. Spencer Perceval was already dead.

The atmosphere in the building turned into total chaos. Nobody could understand anything and wondered whether the murderer was still inside. If he ran out into the street immediately, it would be unlikely that anyone would find the truth. However, there was a witness who recognized the attacker. He claimed that the murderer was John Bellingham. In the course of the investigation, it turned out that the killer had a personal grudge against the government. John Bellingham was a merchant who was imprisoned in Russia. The man believed that it was unfair and tried to get compensation from the government, but all his requests were rejected. He often visited the House of Commons, so his presence in the lobby that day didn’t surprise anyone. Before that, the man had never shown aggression and was just an ordinary man. It never occurred to anyone that he was preparing for such a desperate act. John Bellingham pleaded not guilty and was executed by hanging on May 18, 1812. The death of Spencer Perceval made his wife a widow and twelve children lost their father. The Prime Minister was buried on May 16. In London, you can still hear rumours that the man left his family with almost no money. However, within several days after his death, Parliament voted to pay £50,000 to his family.

Strange and mysterious events have always happened in the world.
