London encountered the same tendency. Unfortunately, many men were forced to join the army and the country’s economy was going through hard times. However, at that time, women played an important role in the development of the city. What kind of work did they do? Did women take part in battles? What global trends were caused by this phenomenon? Everyone was ready to help under any circumstances. The women’s reaction to such events was very impressive as well. In particular, they organised a mass event along the river embankment on July 17, 1915. This action went down in history as the Women’s War Pageant. The main purpose of such a demonstration was to show readiness to provide the military with everything necessary. Thousands of women emphasised that they had to do their duty here in the city while men were fighting on the battlefield. They sought to save the lives of the British, and therefore, it was necessary to increase the pace of military production.

Their readiness was manifested not only in the form of appeals and slogans. In July 1915, approximately 193,000 women were registered as working in weapon production across the country. Work at such enterprises was extremely difficult. Due to the large amount of chemicals, their faces turned yellow and their hair turned green. Women were involved in other spheres as well. Former maids started to clean windows, helped in hospitals and carried heavy boxes with groceries. Women were also often involved in the transportation. Thus, for the first time in the history of London, female conductors appeared on buses. Their dark blue uniform became a kind of symbol of wartime in London. The phenomenon became quite common. For example, about 4,600 women worked in one of the largest bus operators in the city, the London General Omnibus Company.

The issue of equality also became quite important and relevant during the First World War. In London, there were increasingly frequent strikes where women demanded equal pay. In July 1918, a group of women working for the Willesden Bus Company staged a protest. After that, similar calls spread throughout the country. As a result, women were given bonuses, but full equalisation with men’s salaries had never happened.

Women at the front

Many women not only performed their rear duties but also helped at the very front. Violating all gender norms, they went to meet the enemy on a par with men. As volunteers, women joined the Women’s Land Army, the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and the Women’s Royal Naval Service. Very often, women became mechanics, drivers, cleaners and cooks. They also joined hospitals and clerical front-line institutions.

Changes in the post-war period

The war faltered the stereotypical image of a woman of that time. People have seen that women are capable of playing a big role in society. For example, in 1919, they were given an opportunity to obtain a profession in the fields of jurisprudence and accounting. Although full equality was still a long way off, women began to be treated more respectfully in many spheres.

During the First World War, the world faced a new phenomenon, namely, women began to successfully perform men’s work.
