However, they have no idea about the gruesome murders or other horrible crimes that were once committed in this city. Although today, London is the most favourable city for travelling (taking into account crime rates), its history hides several frightening events. These cases still amaze many detectives with their genius and, at the same time, scare local residents. So, who were those criminals and why did their crimes go down in history? Colonel Thomas Blood was its organiser. Despite the somewhat chaotic actions during the robbery, the very plan was thought through in detail. Previously, Thomas had met and established friendly relations with the keeper of the Tower of London and his family. In May 1671, Thomas Blood and several of his friends arrived at the Tower and received no objection to his entrance. Then they hit the guardian on the head with a hammer and the colonel tried to steal the royal jewels. However, the guardian quickly came to his senses and reported about the robbers. At first glance, this is an ordinary story that should have ended with the death penalty, but thanks to the ingenuity and brilliant mind of Thomas, the ending was more than positive for him. Thomas Blood demanded the audience with the King. The colonel knew very well that the monarch was extremely fond of brave people. So, during the conversation, Thomas gave enough arguments that not only contributed to his pardon but also allowed the criminal to get lands in Ireland. What is more, for a long time, he appeared in the royal court at various events.

The legends

There are many more chilling stories of mysterious murders. One of them is the legend of the famous Jack the Ripper. He became a well-known figure in London. Some claim that he is the first serial killer, while others believe that his ghost still haunts the streets of the city. In fact, the story is really mysterious, as the killer was never identified. Nevertheless, he managed to inspire many journalists and writers. This unknown man committed at least five murders in Whitechapel in 1888. His victims were prostitutes. Those murders went down in history because of their unprecedented brutality. That is the reason for the criminal’s pseudonym.

Other interesting cases were related to the poisoning of women in London. These events took place shortly after the Whitechapel murders. The victims were women, whose ages ranged from 18 to 27 years. There were also several prostitutes among the victims. The killer was found by accident. It happened when a US police officer came to London. He accidentally met a criminal and asked him about a poisoner who kills women in the city. The policeman was so impressed by the fact that an ordinary passer-by described the case in great detail. It seemed very suspicious. So, he decided to tell his British colleagues about the strange man. After the suspect was placed under surveillance, the police discovered a number of unexpected facts. The killer was doctor Thomas Neill Cream. He poisoned women with strychnine tablets (which were discovered during his arrest) between 1889 and 1891. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. This story is also related to the legend of Jack the Ripper. Right before his death, Thomas Neill Cream exclaimed that he was Jack. However, it wasn’t proven and there was information that the doctor was in prison at the time of the Whitechapel murders.

A modern tourist enjoys architectural monuments and other unique objects walking through the London streets.
