The Conception and Unveiling of The Royal Artillery Memorial<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the First World War, Britain’s Royal Regiment of Artillery suffered almost 50,000 casualties. This devastating experience, coupled with a deep sense of dignity and professional mastery, drove the regiment to create a lasting memory of their fallen comrades. As a result, the Royal Artillery War Commemoration Fund was established in 1918 to commission a memorial\u2014a tribute from the artillerymen to themselves, their service, and their sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the competition for the Royal Artillery Memorial was announced, it attracted leading British architects and sculptors. However, only one design managed to blend the severity of military symbolism, the depth of shared experience, and architectural clarity. Pearson had worked with the British Red Cross Commission during the war, organising military burials in France and Belgium.
